It's official. Mortal Kombat, along with other Midway heavy-hitters such as Joust and Spy Hunter, looks to have been purchased by Warner Bros. Although not shocking, what is surprising is how they obtained the rights to the publisher and developer: they look to have won by default.
Citing the source, it appears Warner Bros.' $33-million bid was the only genuine offer, seeing as there were no other formal bids. While initially Midway's assets were planned to go up for auction on June 29th, it appears that won't be happening now.
"No other bids came in, so there's not going to be an auction," confirmed Midway's spokesman, Geoff Mogilner. With the purchase Warner Bros. have obtained both of Midway's Chicago and Seattle studios, along with rights to any new or classic intellectual property. This spells good news for DC fans also, as this could very well lead to another Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe crossover in the future; possibly after the next 'glory n gory' Mortal Kombat game Boon has currently been referring to on his Twitter page.
Rejoice Mortal Kombat fans, for it seems our beloved series won't be leaving the fighting game scene anytime soon.
